This Creative Life

We were commissioned by Thames & Hudson and Robyn Lea to design This Creative Life. The book features Robyn Lea’s photographs together with the stories of the private spaces of fashion designers from around the world. The homes and photographs are rich, intricate, layered and full of beautiful details. We wanted the design to hero the photography, and represent the feel of Robyn’s work. We used colour throughout and a cloth spine on the cover for a sense of richness and tactility, like the interiors.

We worked with serifs fonts with a modern take, playing with the idea of old-world with a modern twist, much like the interiors. Each chapter opens with a full page of colour which sets the scene for that chapter – each picking up on a hero hue for that chapter. Robyn’s writes beautifully and reading the stories deepens the reader’s connection with the subjects and their spaces, so rather than understate the body copy, we chose a larger body copy to encourage engagement.
